How to cook the perfect burger

  1. Preheat your grill or skillet to high heat.
  2. Divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball, then flatten it into a patty that’s about 1/2 inch thick. Don’t overwork the meat or it will become tough.
  3. Season both sides of each patty with salt and pepper.
  4. Place the patties on the hot grill or skillet. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side for medium-rare, or longer if you prefer your burger more well-done.
  5. While the burgers are cooking, butter the brioche buns and toast them on the grill or in a separate skillet until lightly browned.
  6. When the burgers are almost done, place a slice of cheddar cheese on each patty and let it melt.
  7. To assemble the burger, spread some mayonnaise, ketchup, and mustard on the bottom half of each bun. Add a few lettuce leaves and a slice of tomato. Place the burger patty with the melted cheese on top of the tomato, then add a few pickles. Cover with the top half of the bun.
  8. Serve the burgers hot and enjoy!

When is National Hamburger Day?

Is today National Hamburger Day? If today is May 28, the answer is yes!

National Hamburger Day, or National Burger Day, is celebrated annually on May 28 and, with its proximity to Memorial Day Weekend, National Hamburger Day is as good as any reason to bust out the charcoal and do some backyard grilling. While the origins of this particular holiday are somewhat foggy (from what we can gather, it seems National Burger Day has been observed since at least 2010), there’s no disputing the best way to celebrate: get to grilling!

If you’re already been doing a fair amount of burger-ing this year and are looking to mix things up a bit, we salute you for your efforts to appease the almighty ground beef gods! Here are just a few of the different types of burgers you might consider trying out to celebrate National Hamburger Day this year:

  • 50/50 Burger: Half ground beef, half ground bacon patty
  • California Burger: Cheeseburger with bacon and avocado or guacamole
  • Juicy Lucy Burger: Cheeseburger with the cheese inside the ground beef patty
  • Patty Melt Burger: Hamburger with grilled onion and cheddar or Swiss cheese on rye bread
  • Veggie Burger: Just kidding, of course!
