Meal Plan for the Week With Chipotle
By Chris Zimmerman
March 20, 2024
You’ve probably had Chipotle and said to yourself, “I could eat this every day for the rest of my life.” Just typing that sentence made me long for guacamole. I wish I was joking.
Lately, many Chipotle fanatics with similar cravings have turned to large catering orders from their restaurant to meal prep their own burrito bowls for the week.
Curious if a Chipotle catering order is right for you? Dig in and find out!
Chipotle catering meal prep: What’s included?
Chipotle offers several catering options, but the Build Your Own order is the most popular.
The standard Build Your Own order comes with:
- 2 bases: cilantro-lime white rice, brown rice, black beans, pinto beans, lettuce
- 1 protein: chicken, caritas, steak, barbacoa, sofritas, guacamole
- 2 toppings: fajita veggies, shredded cheese, sour cream, taco lettuce
- 2 salsas: fresh tomato, roasted chili-corn, tomatillo-green chili, tomatillo-red chili
- 1 tortilla: crispy corn shells or soft flour tortilla
Is this Chipotle meal prep hack affordable?
Chipotle enthusiasts across the internet report spending anywhere from $100 to $130 on their catering orders from the restaurant, with enough food to make ~10 servings. That ends up in a cost per serving of about $10 to $13. This can vary based on location.
In my location, the total comes to $103.50.
So, is it worth it?
If you’re trying to eat out less, Chipotle catering can be a convenient and cost-effective meal prep option. A 2023 US Foods survey shows that nearly half of Americans spend between $11 and $20 per meal when dining out. Your average burrito bowl at Chipotle today will cost around $13 after tip.
But if you’re feeling ambitious and want to save even more, a home-cooked option might be your best bet. While the average home-cooked meal comes in at around $4.70 per serving, a convincing burrito bowl will likely cost a bit more.
Depending on the ingredients you choose, you can expect to pay ~$5 to $7 per serving* for the DIY alternative. Bonus points (literally) if you source your ingredients with brands and offers in the Fetch app and snap your receipt!
*This is based on some quick napkin math done by yours truly.
The verdict: If you’re craving Chipotle and want to treat yourself to a week of burrito bowl bliss, a catering order is a solid deal.
