When is National Burrito Day?

It should be every single day. That’s our opinion.

If you’re looking for the official National Burrito Day, that falls on the first Thursday in April every year. That means, this year, National Burrito Day falls on Thursday April 3rd, 2025, so make a note in your diary, put a pin in your calendar, and start a countdown on your phone. If it feels like too long to wait (and we absolutely understand that it might), console yourself with the prospect of weekly Taco Tuesdays in the meantime.

What is National Burrito Day?

It’s yet another reason for us to celebrate the ever-loving burrito (not that we need a reason)! Whether you observe the special day by experimenting with new fillings or indulging yourself in a classic favorite, taking part is made extra enticing by the various promos offered by burrito-based businesses.

It’s also a good opportunity to turn any points earned through the Fetch grocery app into free gift cards. With Fetch, you can earn rewards on everything you need for a homemade burrito, or let the professionals take care of you by using a Fetch gift card at your local Chipotle or Taco Bell.

What is the difference between a burrito and a chimichanga?

The chimichanga is a Tex-Mex twist on the classic burrito. Still a medley of rice, beans, cheese, and meat rolled into a flour tortilla, it heads into a deep fryer or air fryer to transform into a crispy chimichanga. Basically, a chimichanga is a fried burrito that’s usually served with guacamole, salsa, or something spicy. Yum!

How to make a burrito with Fetch

We could spend the rest of our lives debating whether the making of burritos is more art or science. Suffice to say, the proper wrapping of a burrito is a skill worth acquiring. We’re going to set you on your way with a quick look at how to build, wrap, and serve your standard chicken burrito.

Chicken burrito ingredients list and recipe

Ingredients:

  • Old El Paso™ Super Soft Flour Tortillas
  • Old El Paso™ Refried Beans
  • Old El Paso™ Thick ’N’ Chunky Salsa Tomato Salsa
  • Cooked Rice (250g)
  • Shredded Leftover Cooked Chicken (500g)
  • Grated Cheese (250g)
  • 1 Ripe Avocado

Recipe:

  1. Warm your soft flour tortillas in the microwave for 35 to 45 seconds.
  2. Spread a thin layer of Old El Paso™ Refried Beans almost to the edge of each tortilla.
  3. Add cooked rice, leaving around 3 cm space from the tortilla’s edge.
  4. Add sliced avocado in a rectangular shaped column.
  5. Shred your chicken into bite-sized chunks, then layer them on your avocado column (or avo-column, if you will).
  6. Dollop some salsa onto the chicken, then sprinkle more chicken over the salsa.
  7. Add optional garnishes, such as chilies, radishes, coriander, or a squeeze of lime juice.
  8. Place your tortilla so the column runs left to right, then use both hands to fold in the sides.
  9. Tightly roll the tortilla from bottom to top, keeping a firm grip on the edges.
  10. Cut the wrapped burrito in half and serve to eat immediately, or wrap the burrito in foil to eat later or make an on-the-go meal.

What size tortilla for a burrito is best?

An ill-chosen tortilla can mean feeling a burrito coming apart as you bite down or leaking its precious contents over your hands, and what kind of National Burrito Day would that be? A deeply tragic one.

But did you know almost 100% of burrito catastrophes are preventable? Picking the right size is vital – go for 10 or 12 inches. You’ll also want a soft flour tortilla that will roll without cracking. Old El Paso’s flour tortillas for burritos are perfect – you can microwave them for a few seconds before building your burrito to make a more pliable tortilla.

How many calories does a burrito have?

Like… none, probably? Is it possible they actually burn calories?

No.

Sorry.

Still, the notion that every burrito is a calorie-packed experience is nought but nonsense. “How many calories in a tortilla?” is the first question to ask yourself, and the tortilla itself counts for only around 210 calories while providing a good kick of carbs. What really matters is the size, fillings, and toppings your tortilla holds. Let’s check out rough averages for the usual suspects:

  • Bean Burrito: 300 to 700 calories.
  • Beef Burrito: 400 to 850 calories.
  • Chicken Burrito: 350 to 800 calories.
  • Shrimp Burrito: 400 to 800 calories.
  • Veggie Burrito: 300 to 900 calories.

What sides to serve with burritos

Burritos bind up everything from veggies to meats in one delicious package, so you don’t have to serve anything alongside them. What kind of person would complain about being served only a burrito?

But if you do want to throw in some side dishes, plenty that work with burritos. Even throwing a bottle of GOYA® Salsa Pico de Gallo into the mix will kick your dinner up a notch, and other favorites include:

  • Nachos
  • Mexican Black Beans
  • Guacamole and Chips
  • Enfrijoladas de queso (we’ve already put together a recipe)
  • Mexican Coleslaw
  • Cactus Salad
  • Lime and Coriander Rice
  • Coleslaw
  • Mexican Corn (Esquites)
  • Mexican Rice With Chipotle

Where to find National Burrito Day deals

Does Chipotle do anything for National Burrito Day?

Burritos are a Chipotle staple and specialty. Of course they did something to celebrate National Burrito Day! It’s basically their Christmas.

Last year, they “hid” more than $1,000,000 in free burritos inside a Burrito Vault game. The day before National Burrito Day 2024, they gave away 100,000 Buy-One-Get-One free entrée codes, which could only be redeemed on National Burrito Day, all via the site www.unlockburritoday.com. Way more enjoyable than a normal game of hide-and-seek if you ask me. We’ll have to wait to see what they have cooked up for us this year!

And if you’re looking for more ways to save at Chipotle, you need Fetch! Points earned through snapping receipts in our shopping app can be redeemed for free Chipotle gift cards, which means you could be eating for free and making any day National Burrito Day.

Does Taco Bell do anything for National Burrito Day?

Of course Taco Bell likes to participate as well! In 2024, they ran a deal where if you bought one burrito using the Taco Bell app, you could get a second burrito of equal or lesser value for half off.

While no official announcement has been made for this year, we imagine they’ll be offering a similar deal or one that’s just as delicious.

Earn rewards on all your burrito ingredients and groceries

National Burrito Day might not be a federal holiday (it should be) or be observed throughout the globe (it should be, as should National Taco Day), but it’s a welcome opportunity to treat yourself. Just be sure to snap a picture of your receipt using the Fetch app or place an online order through Fetch Shop to maximize your rewards before digging in.
