When is spring cleaning?
Spring cleaning is just what it sounds like: cleaning your home leading into the start of spring. If you’re a stickler for dates, spring starts on the vernal equinox, which is March 19th, 20th, or 21st. Spring cleaning in 2024 starts on March 19th.
Spring cleaning can also be whenever you want it! People use “spring cleaning” to mean all kinds of things related to cleaning, sort of like “cleaning house.” There’s never a bad time to spruce up the house, either, even if it’s just getting a bit more organized.
Spring cleaning safety tips
You’ve got your checklist, you have your cleaning supplies, and you’re ready to go! Before you get started, we have some very important spring cleaning safety tips for you
- Follow Instructions. Your cleaning supplies should have very clear safety instructions, and you can seriously hurt yourself if you ignore them. Wear gloves, wear safety glasses or a mask. Do whatever the cleaning supplies say.
- Go Mild. Your gut instinct might be to leave “mild” to the kids’ tacos on Taco Tuesday, but when cleaning, you should start mild first. If you need serious cleaners like ammonia or bleach, then you can use them when necessary.
- Ventilate. Even if you’re masking, it’s good to get that airflow going to keep you from breathing in any hazardous fumes.
- Go Green. Homemade or “green” cleaners can make it easy to follow our spring cleaning safety tips. Green products are generally safer for you and the environment.
- Keep Cleaning Products Out of Reach. Kids and pets shouldn’t be able to reach even your mild cleaning products.
- Empty Your Buckets. Even a couple of inches of water in a bucket is enough for a child to drown in. Don’t leave a bucket of mop water just sitting about.
- Tread Carefully. After you’ve mopped a floor, it’s going to be slick. Walk slowly and carefully to keep from falling.
Kitchen cleaning hacks
Some of our favorite kitchen cleaning hacks use what you’ll already find in your kitchen.
Baseboard cleaning hacks
- Use a magic eraser or cleaning wipes to quickly and easily strip your baseboards of dust.
- Attach a dryer sheet to a swiffer to pick up lint and dust.
- Fill a spray bottle with 1 part lemon oil to 1 part vinegar for a DIY woodwork polish to wipe down cabinets, baseboards and other surfaces.
Oven cleaning hacks
- Clean your oven overnight with a mixture of ⅓ cup water, ⅓ cup white vinegar and ½ cup baking soda. Use a spray bottle to coat a cool oven with the mixture (avoid the heating elements) and let soak for 12 hours.
- Soak your oven racks in a tub of powdered washing detergent. Let them sit for up to 4 hours, scrub clean, and they’ll look good as new. Let time do the work with this oven cleaning hack.
- Avoid using the “cleaning mode” on your oven. It’s often more trouble than it’s worth.
Air fryer cleaning hacks
- Clean that air fryer by soaking the basket in hot water for 20-30 minutes.
- Never use metal utensils to scrape away build-up, as it can ruin the non-stick surface.
- The most important air fryer cleaning hack is to do it often. It’s recommended to clean your air fryer as often as you use it.
Bathroom cleaning hacks
We hope you’re cleaning the bathroom more frequently than once a year, but if you’re limiting your cleaning to spring cleaning, we’ve got some bathroom cleaning hacks that can help.
Toilet cleaning hacks
- Coca Cola, white vinegar and vodka can all leave your toilet bowl looking sparkling and new.
- Use shaving cream to clean your toilet. Its foaming properties eliminate uric acid crystals and their smell.
Shower cleaning hacks
- Clean mineral stains from your shower door with Scrub Daddy Power Paste.
- Fill a zippable plastic bag with vinegar and zip it around your shower head to break up deposits without taking your shower head off.
- Use Bar Keepers Friend to polish your tub and fixtures.
Bedroom cleaning hacks
If you’re looking to declutter your home, fast, then our bedroom cleaning hacks are for you. While clutter can accumulate anywhere in your house, your closet(s) and the space under your bed(s) are clutter magnets. Here are our top bedroom cleaning hacks for a tidy home, fast.
- Dust soft surfaces with a lint roller.
- Use a vacuum upholstery attachment to clean window blinds.
- Dust flat surfaces with a microfiber cloth.
- Spot clean glass streaks using hydrogen peroxide.
- Vodka can quickly deodorize a mattress.
