When is National Mac and Cheese Day?

Can’t wait for the big event? Is it National Mac and Cheese Day today, perhaps?

Only if you’re reading this on July 14. That’s when you’ll find mac and cheese offers aplenty, plus just one more reason to experiment with new flavors, additions, brands, and recipes.

When was the first National Mac and Cheese Day? We’re unsure. The box form goes back to 1937, but creating a creamy casserole from pasta and parmesan is something the Italians have been doing for centuries – we truly owe Italy a lot when it comes to comfort food. Between writing the Declaration of Independence and serving as President, Thomas Jefferson may have been one of the first to bring the recipe across the Atlantic.

Come to think of it, that’s probably why he’s on Mount Rushmore.

How to earn rewards on National Mac and Cheese Day with Fetch

Whether as a casserole in the northeast, a spicy side in the south, or a hot dish across the Midwest, every corner of America makes mac and cheese its own. However you have it, we can help you earn extra reward points when you purchase products from our partnered brands, including mac and cheese big shots like Annie’s and Barilla.

Tried Annie’s Mac and Cheese yet?

Earn free gift cards through your Fetch grocery app, and you can pick up all kinds of mac and cheese brands from stores all over the country. Annie’s is one of our top picks thanks to its quality ingredients and vast range. Apart from the classics, you can sample anything from Penne & Four Cheese to Spirals with Butter and Parmesan – there’s even Disney and Spiderman shaped mac to keep the kids happy.

Is Annie’s Mac and Cheese Gluten Free?

Annie’s shells contain no artificial flavors or synthetic colors, making them a go-to for the health-conscious. Gluten-free boxes are also available, plus vegan, organic, grassfed, and low-sodium options.

What makes Barilla Pasta stand out?

Classic blue box Barilla is the pasta every curmudgeonly Italian grandmother wants you to use. It’s made with high-end non-GMO ingredients and is bronze cut to give each piece a rough and textured surface perfect for holding sauces and soaking up flavors.

We recommend the Barilla baked mac and cheese recipe that tops traditional mac and cheese with a crunchy breadcrumb mixture.

Mac and cheese ingredients:

  • 1 box of Barilla® Elbows pasta
  • 3 cups of heavy cream
  • 4 cups of shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup of grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese
  • Salt and white pepper, to taste

Topping ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup of Panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 tbsp of extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 tbsp of minced garlic
  • 1 tsp of chopped fresh parsley

Recipe:

  1. Preheat your oven to 425 ºF.
  2. Add olive oil, garlic, and breadcrumbs to a skillet over medium heat, then toss until toasted (2 to 3 minutes).
  3. Add parsley, then remove from the skillet.
  4. Boil a large pot of water and cook the pasta elbows according to package instructions.
  5. Bring cream to a boil in a skillet, then simmer for 3 minutes before turning off the heat and whisking in the cheeses, seasoning to taste.
  6. Thoroughly drain the pasta and mix in the cheese sauce, then pour it into a 13” x 9” greased baking dish and let sit for 10 minutes.
  7. Top your pasta with the toasted breadcrumbs and pop it in the oven until those breadcrumbs turn golden brown.
