What is RAID: Shadow Legends?
RAID: Shadow Legends was so heavily and widely promoted that it became something of a meme, but do you actually know the type of game it is?
Well, here are the basics.
RAID: Shadow Legends is a free-to-play collection RPG in which you’ll build teams to fight in turn-based combat. Over 800 legendary heroes from 15 factions provide a depth of gameplay and strategy remarkable even among RPGs, and the dark fantasy setting combines with a rich and engaging storyline to draw in newcomers.
Meme-ification aside, it’s a very popular game with an estimated 50 to 60 million downloads on Google Play and 40 to 80 million through the Apple Store.
How to play RAID: Shadow Legends
Gameplay in RAID: Shadow Legends revolves around turn-based combat. Your team of three to five Champions with their own special abilities, attacks, and buffs do battle with small groups of enemies in successive waves, so learning combat mechanics and the basics of Champion selection is crucial to get ahead.
Choosing Champions
Each Champion (and each enemy) has one of four Affinities: Magic (blue), Force (red), Spirit (green), and Void (purple). The first three form a power triangle:
- Magic beats Spirit
- Spirit beats Force
- Force beats Magic
Voids are balanced – not super effective or weak against any other type.
You’ll need to level up your Champions using experience points (XP), which also adds slightly to their main stats for each level.
Game modes
You’ll spend most of your early-game in the Campaign, building up a powerful team, picking up Artifacts, and even leveling up a few three-star Champions. There’s 12 areas in each campaign, and you can play on Normal, Hard, Brutal, or Nightmare.
Other options include:
- Dungeons: Provide weekly rotating bosses that drop valuable items, plus more powerful event bosses throughout the year.
- Arena: This is where you can take on other players in PvP battles.
- Clan Bosses: Once you’re in a clan, you’re able to join in facing off against Clan Bosses for a chance to score some loot.
- Doom Tower: Unlocked at higher levels, Doom Tower is essentially a huge dungeon with 120 floors.
- Cursed City: Also unlocked at higher levels, Cursed City is similar to a fresh campaign and features new battles against which to test yourself.
Combat mechanics
Every enemy and friendly Champion has a yellow Turn Meter – once it’s full, they can take a turn. Champions also have a green Health Points (HP) bar.
Each turn lets you play an ability. You’ll mostly tackle three rounds of enemies, though some scenarios (such as Arena and Clan Boss fights) feature only a single round.
Manual Battle mode lets you dive into the tactics and take full control of your Champions. If you’re more into progression and collection, Auto Battle mode lets AI handle the basics, though you can direct your entire team’s focus to a single target.
Is RAID: Shadow Legends free to play?
RAID certainly offers microtransactions for gamers interested in leveling up fast, but it’s still free to download and totally free to play. That makes it just like the other games in the Fetch Play library.

Most frequently-asked questions about RAID: Shadow Legends
Is RAID: Shadow Legends good?
An understandable question, honestly. It’s been promoted far and wide, especially across the likes of YouTube and Twitch, and such exposure can impart a sour taste.
Really though, is it good? We’d say so, and it isn’t just us. The graphics received widespread acclaim, especially in terms of character animations, and the story-driven single-player campaign throws plenty of lore at players who live for such things.
Best of all, it’s such a content-rich game – even among mobile RPGs – with such peerless skill customization that adventures can be nearly endless and strategy surprisingly deep.
How to level up fast in RAID: Shadow Legends
The internet holds a lot of guides on this, so we’ve gone through and broken down some of the most common strats for leveling up fast in RAID: Shadow Legends.
Campaign farming
The solo campaign is split into 12 chapters with multiple stages and can be done on increasing difficulties ranging from Normal to Brutal. The higher the difficulty, the greater the reward. Grind stages over and over to farm experience – the general consensus is that Stage 6 in each chapter is the best for farming, but YMMV.
Use a dedicated Champion
Pick a strong Champion that can clear stages solo. Use fodder Champions and rank them up to give your main Champion a boost.
Use XP brews frequently
XP brews are the fastest way to level up Champions, so use them whenever possible.
Reach level 60 ASAP
Levels go up to 100, but 60 is when you’ll get the max energy capacity, which opens up more campaign runs.
Do daily faction wars
They don’t require energy but can significantly boost a Champion’s stats in all areas. Anyone looking to level up fast in RAID: Shadow Legends shouldn’t skip a single day.
How to redeem codes in RAID: Shadow Legends
RAID: Shadow Legends Promo Codes grant everything from in-game resources like Silver to consumables like Rank-Up Chickens and even Champions to add to your collection.
Here’s how to redeem codes in RAID: Shadow Legends:
- When in the Bastion, tap the tab on the left-hand side of the screen and select “Promo Codes” to open the Promo Codes Window.
- Type in your promo code and hit “Confirm.”
- If the entry was successful, you’ll receive confirmation and can claim rewards from your inbox in the Bastion.
You’ll find valid Promo Codes on official RAID: Shadow Legends social media accounts, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and the official Discord. Just keep in mind that you’re limited to one use per person and must wait 24 hours between entering codes.
Is RAID: Shadow Legends pay to win?
RAID: Shadow Legends isn’t pay-to-win. You can progress as far as you want without spending a cent. You might instead consider it pay-to-win-fast. In-game purchases certainly provide an advantage that typically means you’ll progress faster and be ready for meatier challenges sooner.
It’s really up to you. As seasoned gamers tend to point out, you spend either time or money.
Here’s some free-to-play strategies if you’re still mulling over the wisdom of in-game purchases.
- Spend 800 gems to acquire all masteries ASAP – it’s a hefty sum, but you’ll significantly accelerate your early game.
- Begin in Campaign and maximize XP gain by not using additional Champions.
- Keep checking available missions and quests and ensure you don’t miss any that are easy to complete for a convenient reward or energy boost.
- Join an active clan as soon as you meet the damage requisites and take part in Clan Boss battles.
- Your maximum energy increases at higher levels, so wait as long as possible to claim energy rewards.
How to awaken in RAID: Shadow Legends
Awakening was introduced back in 2022 as a method of upgrading Champions with new buffs, known as Blessings. Each one gives distinct bonus stats or abilities, and all Champions can be Awakened.
How, you ask? You’ll need to collect each Champion’s Souls to Awaken them. Pick up Perfect Souls or Split Souls by dismantling Soulstone, or collect them through the Soul Merchant in Altar of Souls.
How to get chickens in RAID: Shadow Legends
Chickens come in 3-star, 4-star, and 5-star ranks. You can sacrifice one of the appropriate rank in lieu of a Champion when promoting another Champion to their next rank, making chickens an extremely valuable consumable.
You can pick up chickens through:
- In-game offers
- Events
- Tournaments
- The 3v3 Bazaar
- Clan Shop
- Advanced quests
What is a Perfect Soul in RAID: Shadow Legends?
While Split Souls Awaken your Champions one level at a time, Perfect Souls can Awaken them to the exact Level of Awakening indicated by their number of red stars – no further steps or requisites! Find a Champion’s 6-star Perfect Soul and you can fully Awaken them in one step.
But they’re far from a dime a dozen. Soulstones always summon Perfect Souls, but to get them you’ll need to spend Soul Coins at the Mystic Market and use Silver for the summoning itself.
Where is the Bazaar in RAID: Shadow Legends?
Start competing in Tag Team Arena battles and you’ll earn Gold Bars. These unlock the Bazaar, which is also where you’ll spend that gold. The Bazaar is home to exclusive items and gear, plus:
- Silver
- Energy
- XP Brews
- Skill Tomes
- Ancient Shards
- Rank 3 Chickens
How to build the best teams in RAID: Shadow Legends
Team-building is at the heart of RAID: Shadow Legends strategy. If you’re ever struggling to beat a stage – especially early on – the likely culprit is a poorly balanced team. For example, rookies often include too many Force dealers and not enough Spirit or Magic supports, meaning their team lacks sustainability.
As a general rule of thumb, your go-to team should include:
- 2 damage dealers
- 1 support or control Champion
- 1 debuff Champion
- 1 reviver
