What is Yahtzee With Buddies?
Currently sitting at over 10 million downloads through Google Play alone, Yahtzee With Buddies is the official mobile version of Hasbro’s classic dice game. As in its iconic forerunner, Yahtzee With Buddies sees you rolling dice to score points, but you can also collect achievements, explore different game modes, take part in tournaments, and more.
And if friends and family are busy (or still nursing their wounds over the licking you just gave them), you can always play Yahtzee With Buddies with strangers or defeat Dice Masters in solo adventure mode.
How to play Yahtzee With Buddies
Each Yahtzee With Buddies game consists of 13 turns during which you’ll roll dice combinations to score points. Score more than your opponent after all turns are over, and the game is yours.
A turn starts by rolling all five dice. You can then choose to ‘hold’ any of those dice and re-roll the rest. You can stop rolling and play your score at any time, but you’re limited to two additional rolls, plus any available bonus rolls for a third roll.
Now it’s time to play your score. You can tap any space – but only one space – on your scorecard to apply your score for each turn. Each has its own rules, and they’re broken into an Upper Section and Lower Section.
Upper Section spaces include:
- Ones
- Twos
- Threes
- Fours
- Fives
- Sixes
These are easy enough. Your score is the sum of every dice showing that number. If your dice read 1, 2, 2, 4, 4, you’ll get 4 points from the Twos category or 8 points from the Fours category. You’ll also earn a 35 point bonus for scoring 63 points or more in the Upper Section.
Lower Section spaces are harder to fill but more rewarding. They include:
- 3 of a Kind: Match three dice of any value. Sum all dice and enter the total.
- 4 of a Kind: Match four dice of any value. Sum all the dice and enter the total.
- Full House: Match three dice of one value and two of a different value.
- Small Straight: Match a series of dice four in succession, such as 1, 2, 3, 4
- Large Straight: Match a series of dice five in succession, such as 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
- Yahtzee: Match five of anything
- Chance: The sum of all five of your dice. Commonly used when nothing else can be completed, such as an almost-Yahtzee.
If you can’t fill any scoring space, you’ll take a zero.
We know it sounds tricky. Newbies invariably despair of mastering even the basics, but you’ll quickly pick them up and begin appreciating the scope for tactical play.
Yahtzee With Buddies gameplay hacks
Speaking of which, here’s some tips for maximizing points and winning games.
Let others send the invite
If you can, accept invites rather than sending them. This means you’ll go second, which provides the opportunity to check out your opponent’s score and know what you need to beat.
Keep the chance slot open
This is your once-a-game lifeline to prevent zeros, so keep it open as long as possible.
Use free rolls strategically
Free Rolls are ideally saved for when they can make the biggest difference, such as when you’re one dice from a Yahtzee or Large Straight.
Lock in solid scores
It’s extremely tempting to roll the dice (both literally and figuratively) on the chance of a high-scoring Full House or Yahtzee, but you’ll often find it’s smarter to lock in a solid 3 or 4 of a Kind if you aren’t really trailing on points.
Focus on fours, fives, and sixes
High value dice make it much easier to reach the 63-point threshold for a 35 point Upper Section bonus. Stick with them after your first roll, even if you’re hoping for another category.
