What is Elden Ring Nightreign?

Is Elden Ring Nightreign a sequel or an entirely new game by FromSoftware? How do you feel about both? What about neither? A spinoff of Elden Ring, the Elden Ring Nightreign trailer should feel familiar to anyone who spent time in the Lands Between, but it’s a very different kind of game.

Elden Ring Nightreign is multiplayer from the jump, dropping players back into Limgrave, where they will partner with two other players to clear the area of encounters for two in-game “days.” On the third day, players will work together to defeat one of eight final bosses. While there is a single player mode, Elden Ring Nightreign is built on co-op: you can play with randomly selected gamers online or you can connect with friends using a passcode.

Think roguelike meets battle royale, and since it’s by FromSoftware, you can trust Elden Ring Nightreign’s multiplayer experience to be a truly punishing ordeal every time.

What we know about Elden Ring Nightreign so far

Right now, we know about as much about Elden Ring Nightreign as we don’t know. First, we want to cover the essentials: how can you play Elden Ring Nightreign, when can you play it and how much does it cost?

Elden Ring Nightreign platforms

Elden Ring Nightreign platform options offer gamers more choice than most new games. While you won’t find it on the Switch, you can play Elden Ring Nightreign on four consoles (and PC):

  • PlayStation 4
  • PlayStation 5
  • Xbox One
  • Xbox Series X/S
  • Windows PC

Is Elden Ring Nightreign cross-platform?

Elden Ring Nightreign is sort of cross-platform. As one of the only games still released on previous generation consoles, PlayStation players can play with other PlayStation players, whether on PS4 or PS5, and the same can be said of Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S players.

But if you’re looking to play with your PlayStation friends from your Xbox (or vice versa), you’re out of luck. Elden Ring Nightreign isn’t cross-platform for PC gamers, either, but most of them are used to playing separate from consoles.

Is Elden Ring Nightreign multiplayer?

Yes, Elden Ring Nightreign is multiplayer. In fact, we expect the bulk of the game to be built around the multiplayer experience. If none of your friends play the game (or they play on different platforms), you can be sorted into a trio with other players.

Elden Ring Nightreign release date

Elden Ring Nightreign’s release date is coming in 2025, but beyond that, nothing has been set in stone. Be sure to check back with us; we’ll update the blog when we know more.

FromSoftware has historically released their “soulslike” games in Q1. The original Elden Ring, Sekiro, Bloodborne, Dark Souls II, Dark Souls III and Demon’s Souls all initially released in January, February or March.

With no release date announced and the open beta “stress test” of the Elden Ring Nightreign multiplayer servers running February 14-17, we can assume FromSoftware will be breaking from their Q1 release trend.

Elden Ring Nightreign price

The Elden Ring Nightreign price has yet to be announced, but gamers are expecting it to come in well under the standard $70 price tag of new games. There’s no doubt that a $70 price tag wouldn’t deter many fans, but due to the size of the game, the Elden Ring Nightreign price is expected to be around $40, just like the Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree DLC.

Frequently asked questions about Elden Ring Nightreign

What is the storyline of Elden Ring Nightreign?

Right now, we know more about what the Elden Ring Nightreign storyline isn’t than what it is.

  • George R.R. Martin was not brought in to consult on the Elden Ring Nightreign storyline.
  • The spinoff takes place in Limgrave, the first open world area of Elden Ring.
  • Nightreign’s story takes place in a separate universe.
  • The Shattering still occurred in Nightreign, but the rest of continuity is up in the air.

This makes a kind of sense for what we know about the Elden Ring Nightreign gameplay: a routinely resetting world with a currently fixed number of bosses and pre-made characters doesn’t play well with continuity.

Does Elden Ring Nightreign introduce new weapons or abilities?

We saw a glimpse in the Elden Ring Nightreign trailer, but we’re getting confirmation of gameplay elements that set Nightreign apart from the original game.

Each of the eight playable characters has unique equipment, proficiencies and abilities, including ultimate attacks designed specifically for co-op play with any of the other seven characters. Here’s what we know so far about the characters available.

  • Wylder is an armored knight who looks like your typical Elden Ring or Dark Souls protagonist with a longsword. A claw shot ability lets Wylder move faster than you’d expect.
  • Duchess is a scout-like character with a magical dagger, built around dodging and maneuverability. A key ability, “restage,” essentially re-deals damage to your enemies a second time.
  • Guardian is a pretty traditional tank, with a shield to absorb damage and a whirlwind area of effect attack.
  • Recluse is a frail mage and will likely be the most difficult to play out of the box. You’ll be able to absorb magic attributes from enemy attacks and redirect them in a unique cocktail.

Some have speculated that Nightreign may introduce new movement or combat mechanics, but given how it is built on the structure of the original game, we’d be surprised if there’s anything beyond combining your ultimate attacks.

What are the system requirements for Elden Ring Nightreign?

System requirements are easy for your consoles: make sure they’re updated and you have enough hard drive space.

Minimum PC system requirements for Elden Ring Nightreign are:

  • Windows 10 with Intel Core i5-2500K or AMD FX-6300
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 or AMD Radeon R9 280
  • 8 GB RAM
  • 60 GB available space

Recommended system requirements for Nightreign are:

  • Windows 10 with Intel Core i7-4770K or AMD Ryzen 5 1500X
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 or AMD Radeon RX 580
  • 16 GB RAM
  • 60 GB available space

Will Elden Ring Nightreign have DLC?

No Elden Ring Nightreign DLC has been announced yet, but it’s possible we will see three different types of DLC:

  • New cosmetics that allow for customization of your characters
  • New characters to freshen up the game
  • New bosses to present a new challenge

How does Elden Ring Nightreign compare to the original Elden Ring?

The two games look very similar and feature similar settings, but they are otherwise quite different.

  • Nightreign is more focused on gameplay and cooperation with other players, while the original Elden Ring had a long and involved storyline.
  • The pre-made characters of Nightreign also remove one of the biggest challenges of a FromSoftware game: speccing out your build.
  • Elden Ring featured an expansive world, while Nightreign is focused on Limgrave (for now).
